Pack good quality base layers for each child:
Proper ski socks and thermals! The base layer can be the most important to get right, too short socks will cause ski boots to rub and we want kids to be as comfy as possible on the slopes! Usually you’ll need a thermal layer, fleece layer and outer layer depending on the time of year. It can get warm on the baby slopes in spring.
Outer layer:
Ski Jacket or one piece snowsuit. Depending on your preference, one pieces are definitely more practical for under 2’s. If you go for snow pants then look for ones with dungarees or bibs that go right up to the chest which is great for keeping snow out or trousers from falling down!
Don’t forget about sun protection:
The mountain sun can be intense, and little faces need protection. Also, sunglasses or goggles are a must for eye safety. Usually, a pair of low light goggles and one pair of sunglasses should work as you have something for both snowy and sunny days. Even before ski school toddlers need eye protection as the sun reflects off the bright white snow. Some toddlers aren’t used to wearing sunglasses and keeping them on can be a challenge so get your toddler to try them on a few times at home before.
Mittens or gloves?:
This is my top tip! Buy long gloves that go over the jacket and zip up at the side. Bonus if they have wrist straps so they always stay attached to your child. I would also recommend mittens until children are around 5 years old. To get children to push their hands right into their gloves or mittens you can ask them to try and touch your nose as you put them on for them.
Snow boots :
Important for keeping feet warm when building snowmen or sledging!
Some have removable inner liners which can be taken out at the end of the day to dry out.
Hat and Neck warmer :
Warm hats for hanging out after ski school and a neck warmer or thin buff is great for keeping warm and stopping jackets rubbing on children’s little chins.
Organisation is key:
Packing cubes are your friend! As a mum of 3 who travels often with children I am obsessed with packing cubes, one for each child. Then the older children can have some independence and unpack their own packing cube when they arrive.
The key to a successful ski holiday with kids is that fine balance between preparedness and flexibility… easy right? Remember it’s all about enjoying family time whether it’s on the mountain or cozying up in the chalet!
